Department of Rural and Community Development announces funding for Clare County Council's new Mobile Library Service
Clare County Council is delighted to announce that it has secured funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development to launch a new Mobile Library Service. The announcement was made by Heather Humphreys TD as part of a major investment of over €25 million in Public Library Services in Ireland.
The Mobile Library will enhance access to culture, education, information and learning opportunities for individuals of all ages throughout the county. The service will operate on a weekly rota, bringing a diverse range of reading material and resources directly to rural communities. The Mobile Library will travel on five key routes, reaching communities such as Lisdoonvarna, Ballyvaughan, Broadford, Clonlara, Bodyke, Doonaha, Clarecastle, Quin, and more.
The Mobile Library Service will cater to all members of the community, and in addition to the scheduled routes it will provide access to library services for those in direct provision, Ukrainian communities, creches and day centres.
Equipped with a wide selection of adult and children's books, audio books, internet access, and a free request service for books not in stock, the Mobile Library will serve as a vital resource hub for residents in isolated communities, those with limited transport options, individuals with disabilities, and young people.
Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Joe Cooney, speaking at the announcement, said, “This new Mobile Library Service will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap in access to essential library services for our rural communities. Our ageing population and the ongoing demand for childcare services highlights the diverse needs of Clare's population, which the Mobile Library Service aims to address through its strategic routes.”
Director of Services for Rural and Community Development, Anne Haugh, further added, “With Clare's population experiencing a 7.2% increase since 2016 and a surge in individuals working from home, many of whom are settling in non-urban areas, the need for accessible library services has never been greater.”
Clare County Librarian Helen Walsh stated that, “This initiative is a key action in our new Library Development Plan 2023-2027, ‘Charting the Future: The Hybrid Library’, and in the Local Economic and Community Plan 2024-2030. It demonstrates a commitment to meeting the needs of communities throughout County Clare."
Clare County Council extends its deepest gratitude to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage for its support in making this initiative a reality.
